ABOUT UDIA

The Universal Design Initiative for Africans (UDIA) is an education and design nonprofit organization that aims to influence the culture of design in Africa through the practice of and advocacy for inclusive and Human-centered design.
We work to influence how the design process from concept to creation of spaces, products and services is carried out in Africa. We envision an Inclusive Africa where human diversity is taken into consideration in the design of spaces, products and services. This will lead to improved value of these designs and enable usability for a wide range of persons including the elderly, people living with temporary or permanent disabilities, children, among others.

About UDIA

UDIA is a nonprofit organization that aims to influence the culture of design in Africa through the practice of and advocacy for inclusive and Human-centered design. People living with disabilities in Africa face multiple levels of discrimination. On one hand, Negative attitudes and perceptions trail disability. As a result, there are myths, prejudices and stereotypes linked to persons living with disability that frustrate their full participation in society.
On the other hand, persons living with disability are unable to access several public spaces, banks, schools, office buildings, libraries, entertainment and recreation places, among others because these facilities are not designed to accommodate them. The need for inclusion is rarely taught in design schools or emphasized in professional practice.

What We Believe

We believe that people are not disabled but societies and built environments can limit the participation of people living with disabilities by creating physical and social obstacles. Therefore, we practice and advocate for a design approach that takes human diversity into consideration- Inclusive Design.

The absence of inclusive design in built spaces, products and services creates physical and social obstacles. Therefore, we practice and advocate for a design approach that takes human diversity into consideration- Universal design.

UDIA seeks to create environments that welcome everyone across the spectrum of ability, age and culture. For this, we create baseline accessibility assessment, using local & international accessibility standards.
